Today, a friend was sharing details of the dark valley she found herself in recently. Her mum had been in ICU for six days before being discharged. As we thanked God that her mum was back at home, we both agreed that one can only experience the depths of God’s love when going through a rough patch.
Our chat made me reflect on my own current experience of a death-dark valley. Almost two years ago now, I distinctly heard the Lord say that He didn’t want me to take a short-cut out of this valley. Rather, He wanted me to go through, and not around. He promised me His presence and that I would come out stronger.
Since then, I’ve been discovering how extremely impatient I am. I want things to work out quickly. The question that repeatedly rings in my mind is “when will this end” . . . perhaps you can relate?
That said, I’m also learning that when God is maturing us, perseverance is an essential, inescapable step. And, I’ve got to tell you, I don’t like it!
The second thing I’m been learning is that God really is by my side. I’ve experienced such tender-love from Him in my low moments. When He says “Do not fear for I am with you,” these aren’t just empty words. He means it.
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. (Isaiah 43:1–2 NIV)
I now know that He is with me. I know He is in control.
He’s got me.
If you’re currently in a dark valley but don’t have the assurance of a relationship with God–through Jesus as your Lord and Saviour–please reach out!
